About the Artist
Edgar Degas (1834–1917) was a French artist and key figure in the Impressionist movement, best known for his depictions of ballet dancers. Though associated with Impressionism, Degas favored realism, focusing on line, composition, and everyday scenes.
His sculpture Little Fourteen-Year-Old Dancer (1881) is one of his most famous works. It portrays a young ballerina in a natural pose, with real materials like a fabric tutu and satin ribbon incorporated into the bronze figure. The sculpture captures both the physical discipline of dance and the vulnerability of youth, highlighting Degas' fascination with movement and human form.
