About the Artist
About the Artist
Alma Thomas (1891–1978) was a pioneering African American artist and educator best known for her vibrant, abstract paintings characterized by rhythmic dabs of color and mosaic-like patterns. Born in Columbus, Georgia, she moved to Washington, D.C., where she became the first graduate of Howard University’s fine arts program. After a long career as a public school art teacher, Thomas gained national recognition in her 70s, becoming the first Black woman to have a solo exhibition at the Whitney Museum of American Art in 1972. Her work was inspired by nature, music, and space exploration, celebrating beauty and joy with a distinct, expressive style.
