Mary Vaux Walcott Botanical Watercolor
At age eight, Mary Vaux Walcott (American 1860-1940) received a set of watercolors and began painting flowers, beginning a life-long vocation.
Vacationing in the Canadian Rockies, she observed and painted the local flora. Returning there for more than 40 years, she produced hundreds of botanical studies.
In 1914, she married Charles D. Walcott, a geologist, paleontologist, and secretary of the Smithsonian Institute. In 1925, the Smithsonian published North American Wild Flowers, a five-volume set containing 400 of Walcott’s paintings of native plants.
