States Cook: "Los Angeles beaches remained segregated until the 1960s. A stretch of Santa Monica Beach known as “Inkwell”, seen here in 1926, was one of the few places black beachgoers could go. This piece was created with no black women at all. During this time women were/started to wear bathing suits. It was called “Inkwell” because this part was only for black people. The name was made up as a description of Black people."
